National Folk Fest in Butte lists first round of acts

The National Folk Festival brings its “moveable feast of deeply traditional folk arts” to Butte July 11-13, for year one of a three-year stay in the Mining City.

The festival, which offers a vast repertoire of music and dance from all over the country, recently released the first round of selections. Among the 25 artists and groups that will take the stage this summer are Shemekia Copeland (blues), Wylie and the Wild West (western), The Seldom Scene (bluegrass), Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca (Congolese/Cuban), The Oinkari Basque Dancers (traditional Basque dancing and music), Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, and The Quebe Sisters Band (Texas fiddling and harmony singing).

Seven stages, ranging in size from a 10,000-seat open-air amphitheater to a small, intimate acoustic-style stage, offer continuous performances. There’s a participatory dance area, as well as workshops, regional and ethnic food, puppetry, parades, craft exhibits and demonstrations and a festival marketplace – and the entire weekend is free.
