Bozeman artist Terry Karson, whose work is described as “abstract and contemplative, minimal yet inviting,” displays collages on paper from recycled packaging through Feb. 25 in the Emerson Center Lobby and a large-scale sculptural installation in the Jessie Wilber Gallery. A reception is slated for 5-8 p.m. Feb. 10.

Karson has said that his collages are “not intended to be pictures to look into, but objects to look at.” He uses recycled consumer cardstock packaging that encases the foods we eat and “are produced by the corporate pillars that both economically support, and ecologically undermine, our culture.”

Karson’s exhibit in the Wilber Gallery is an installation of large pillars, covered with the same type of recycled packaging materials. The inspiration for these pillars came directly from seeing omnipresent tiles while traveling through Turkey.

MMAC shares works by Fra Dana and Frances Carroll Brown

Bozeman gallery hosts survey of works by Montana women artists

The Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture in Bozeman presents a comprehensive exhibit, “Montana Women in the Visual Arts: 1850-2011” through Nov. 11. The two-venue show features historic, modern and contemporary works of art in all media. The last time Montana art enthusiasts had the opportunity to see such a survey was in the 1980s in Custer County. Read more

His eye for composition and his passion for his pursuit were rewarded when his image, "Rural Skyscrapers," received the Grand Prize in the Great Falls Tribune's 2010 photo contest, as well as the grand prize for the 2011 BNSF Calendar photo contest. Mika Holtzinger | “Losing Color”

Mika Holtzinger, who moved to Montana in 2008, shares large-scale paintings that celebrate the beauty and mystery of different species and their ecosystems, through October at Zoot Enterprises Art Gallery, Bozeman; and Nov. 4-Dec. 16 at Gallery 126, Dawson Community College in Glendive. “As an artist, I consider my role to be a steward to nature, a person who observes and interprets the world around them and acts to protect it,” she says.
