On your mark: Gearing up for Montana Women’s Run and other May races
The Montana Women’s Run is gearing up for its 31st annual race, held May 12, the day before Mother’s Day in downtown Billings.
Women of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. In order to emphasize participation and health rather than competition, the motto is: “Bring a Friend: Walk it, Run it, Live it!” Enter online or download an entry forms at www.womensrun.org.
Last year’s run drew 8,700 participants and organizers are hoping to attract more than 9,000 this year for two-mile and five-mile courses, both departing from Second Ave. North in downtown Billings. Runners must pre-register by 6 p.m. Friday, May 11.
A Health Expo and Pasta Night precede the race at MSU Billings. The expo, which offers tips on fitness, nutrition and better health, begins at 4:30 p.m. and dinner is served at 6:30 ($10). This year’s guest speaker is Laurie Kelly, head volleyball coach at Rocky Mountain College and a longstanding advocate and leader for sports and women’s health in Montana.

Three winners claim 52 cases each in Black Star Beer Barter
The second annual Black Star Beer Barter, held Feb. 4 in Whitefish, attracted contestants from as far as the South Pacific and Portland, Ore., to compete for their chance at a year’s supply of Black Star beer. After much deliberation, there was an unexpected outcome: a three-way tie between the “Ultimate Party Bus,” a South Seas fire dancer, and two pro skateboarders. Read more

Cousin sponsors “virtual run” for Sidney teacher Sherry Arnold
The January disappearance of math teacher Sherry Arnold devastated the eastern Montana community of Sidney. Two men have since been arrested for aggravated kidnapping, and officials continue to search for her body. In honor of Arnold's “courage, strength and grace,” her cousin, Beth Risdon of Colorado, has spearheaded a “Virtual Run for Sherry” at 9 a.m. Feb. 11. Read more
Snowshoe walks begin in Glacier Park
Glacier National Park is hosting Winter Signs Snowshoe Walks at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, beginning Jan. 7 and continuing through March 18. The public is invited to join the two-hour, ranger-led snowshoe excursions through the park’s winter wonderland. Participants are encouraged to bring snowshoes or rent them for a nominal fee at the Apgar Visitor Center. Read more

“Why We Ride” | Documentary celebrates Montana’s snow scene
Ben Zeimet is an avid skier, who grew up in Missoula. Inspired by Montana's ski and snowboard culture, he "bought some camera equipment, found some friends who would live out of my Subaru with me, and hit the road.” The result is “Why We Ride," a documentary that opens Nov. 12 at the Wilma Theater in Missoula, and shows across the state in November and December. Montana Waterfalls: A Guide for Sightseers, Hikers and Waterfall Enthusiasts
What is it about waterfalls that makes us pull off the road, or take to the trail, to look at a stream or river where it begins to cascade over a precipice? Filmmaker Ken Burns joins Yellowstone trip
Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and his longtime collaborator, Dayton Duncan, are teaming up with the travel company Tauck to bring their unique perspectives from their films and books to life in first-hand travel experiences called “Ken Burns American Journeys.” The jaunts include a nine-day trip to Yellowstone National Park.
