Bluegrass abounds this summer, with several festivals in Montana, as well as the “grandfather of bluegrass festivals in the Northern Rockies” at nearby Alta, Wyo. Here’s a snapshot:

Some of the finest pickers in the Northwest and from afar gather for this third annual family-friendly festival on the banks of the Kootenai River.

This year's line-up includes the festival’s perennial favorite, Jackstraw; mandolin and fiddle-player Frank Solivan with his Washington, D.C.-based band Dirty Kitchen; the Foghorn Stringband from Portland, Ore., which delivers “ass-kickin’ redneck stringband music”; and Idaho’s Andre Vachon Family Band. The Montana contingent includes Derailed (featuring award-winning teenage pickers from Missoula), Missoula favorite Pinegrass, the sizzling Broken Valley Roadshow, the duo Ramblin' Rose and Bozeman's blistering bluegrass band, the Bridger Creek Boys.

Musicians also offer instrument and vocal workshops on Saturday morning and participate in Sunday's gospel hour. Camping is available on site and at several scenic campgrounds in the area. For details, visit www.krbg.org or call 406-295-9536.
