The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation celebrates the 18th annual National Trails Day on June 5 in a season kick-off event by helping to open and improve the beautiful Skiumah Creek Trail in the Great Bear Wilderness. Volunteers are still needed to help on this hiking trail project, co-sponsored with the American Hiking Society and Montana Conservation Corps.

The day begins at 8 a.m. at the Hungry Horse Ranger Station. Volunteers will spend the day working to clear logs and brush from the Skiumah Creek Trail and helping to install retaining structures to keep erosion and gravity at bay. After a day on the trail, volunteers will celebrate the improvements at a tailgate barbecue at the Hungry Horse Ranger Station from 4-6 p.m., with all the food and fixings provided by the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation.

"Lace up your boots, grab your gloves and get ready for a great experience," said Keagan Zoellner, BMWF program director. "Volunteers will learn new skills in trail work, like using a cross cut saw, and will help keep this trail open and safe while working with other outdoor enthusiasts. It's a fun and meaningful way to celebrate National Trails Day."

Registration closes on May 24. Once volunteers submit their registration, they will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

For detailed information and to register for this National Trails Day project, or to volunteer for any BMWF program, go to www.bmwf.org or contact Zoellner at 406-387-3808 or by email at .

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the trail system and wilderness values in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex in Northwest Montana. Working with four different National Forests in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, the foundation identifies trail system improvements and creates educational, challenging, environmentally-minded and scenic trail and noxious weed service projects into "The Bob."
