Coming to a town near you: Montana Shakespeare in the Parks
Published: August 2, 2010
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks continues its 38th season of providing free entertainment throughout the region with two of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Julius Caesar.” The 10-week tour, which began in June with eight initial performances in Bozeman, and hit the road in July with 75 performances in 60 communities.
Remarkably self-sufficient, the company features 10 professional actors who tour without technical assistance and typically perform outdoors, in parks and on courthouse lawns or football fields. This summer, the anticipated audience of over 30,000 will be treated to two performances that cover the broad perspective of Shakespeare’s genius as a playwright.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” – one of Shakespeare’s most produced plays and best-known comedies – explores two worlds, the royal court of Athens and a “magical forest,” where fairies rule and strange and even nightmarish things can happen.
In contrast, “Julius Caesar,” Shakespeare’s classic tale of betrayal, seethes with espionage, secret alliances, murderous plots and political intrigue. It serves as a cautionary tale for those who crave power and whose ambitions place personal gain above the public good.
