Dorothy Hinshaw Patent | When the Wolves Returned
Published: August 12, 2008
Restoring Nature’s Balance in Yellowstone
Missoula author Dorothy Patent teamed up with father-daughter photographers Dan and Cassie Hartman of Silver Gate, for an engaging look at how the reintroduction of wolves has helped restore ecological balance and diversity in Yellowstone Park.
Accompanied by large color photos, Patent tells how the decision to eradicate wolves from the park eventually had consequences for all aspects of the ecosystem, from the elk and coyotes that grew too numerous without the wolves to keep their numbers in check, to the streamside aspen and willows that were devoured by hungry elk.
With the return of wolves, scientists have noticed that pronghorn antelope and beavers, as well as small predators, such as foxes, owls, badgers and pine martens, appear to be thriving now.
Hinshaw has written more than 100 books for children inspired by her interest in science and nature. The Hartmans, who live on the northeastern edge of Yellowstone Park, are avid hikers and photographers who use their big backyard as a backdrop.
The book was published April 2008 by Walker Books for Young Readers, New York, NY, and sells for $17.95 hardcover.
