Select items from the Frances Senska and Jessie Wilber collection will be on display 4-8 p.m. Sept. 23 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Weaver Room at the Emerson Center in Bozeman. Both women were influential artists and art professors at Montana State University.
The exhibit and sale include artwork and personal memorabilia by two icons of the Montana art world, as well as works by former students and friends.
Frances Senska (1914 – 2009) lived a simple but rich life, woven through with art from her early years well into her 90s. Though many know her as the “grandmother of ceramics” in Montana (she taught renowned ceramists Peter Voulkos and Rudy Autio), Senska was versed in a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, wardrobe tailoring, woodcarving, enamelware, silversmithing and lithography.
Jessie Wilber (1912 – 1989) enjoyed a life equally enriched by art. Though primarily a two-dimensional artist known for her sketches, collages and serigraphs, she also enjoyed weaving and “string projects,” enamelware, ceramics and playing the piano. Her love of the outdoors, animals, and gardening played a major role in influencing her life’s work.
