MSU brings Bogosian’s provocative “SubUrbia” to Bozeman

The Montana State University’s School of Film and Photography stages the scathingly funny play “SubUrbia,” written by Eric Bogosian and directed by Professor Tom Watson. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 19-March 6, at MSU's Black Box Theater (corner of 11th and Grant streets on the MSU campus in Bozeman).
“SubUrbia,” which The New York Times calls “provocatively gritty and raw,” follows the adventures of an ensemble of misanthropic 20-somethings as they “brawl, bait and bash” each other through the night in the parking lot of a Pakistani family’s 7-Eleven.
It’s a wild romp for the townie slackers who have gathered for the return of Pony, the one member of their circle of friends who has escaped their small town and found middling success as a rock ’n roll MTV guitarist. Their debauched night is fueled by Oreos, beer, pizza and rage.
The Boston Herald calls Bogosian’s play a “feverishly driven look at angry, socially disengaged youth” and “Chekhov high on speed and Twinkies.”
After the original stage production in 1995, “SubUrbia” was made into a major motion picture directed by Richard Linklater. The film starred Parker Posey, Steve Zahn, Giovanni Ribisi and Nicky Katt. Bogosian’s rewrite of the play in 2006 won an Obie for the ensemble when it was performed at the Lincoln Center.
Due to strong language, MSU’s production is recommended for mature audiences.
