The 25th annual Race to the Sky, one of Montana’s best-known winter sporting events, gets underway Feb. 12. Mushers from throughout the United States gather for this unusual test of physical power, mental toughness, teamwork, and the special bond between human and canine.

Working together, dogs and mushers negotiate the trail through Montana’s scenic Rocky Mountains.

Preliminary festivities start Friday, Feb. 12, in Helena with a vet check and Mushing Art Show, noon-5 p.m. at the Capitol, and a Musher Dinner and Dance, 6-9 p.m. at the Elks Club.

The 350-mile race gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday, with mushers dashing from Camp Rimini (a World War II-era dog-training camp near Helena) to Elk Park in Butte (the Mining City will also host sled-dog rides).

The race resumes at noon Sunday from Hi Country Snack Foods in Lincoln, and concludes Feb. 17 back in Lincoln, with a 25th anniversary awards ceremony and dinner that evening.

New this year is a Junior Race, departing at 10 a.m. Sunday from Lincoln and concluding Monday in Seeley Lake. Watch the speeding dogs go by at checkpoints in Lincoln, Ovando, Seeley Lake and Condon.
