The Surface Design Association is a nonprofit educational organization with a goal of increasing awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities, as well as the general public. Surface design includes any creative exploration of processes such as dyeing, painting, printing, stitching, embellishing, quilting, weaving, knitting, crocheting, felting, papermaking or non-textile materials that utilize textile techniques.
SDA is both a national and international organization with over 4,000 members and hosts a conference every two years in Kansas City, Mo. The next conference is slated for May 2009.
