UM Productions brings alternative rockers Ween to the Wilma Theatre in Missoula May 30. Tickets go on sale March 5.

"Ween is more in tune with the fundamental nature of rock and roll than anyone currently making music,” writes Popmatters. “They’re doggedly passionate, gloriously theatrical, brilliantly subversive, and maybe a little bit evil."

Ween was formed in 1984 in New Hope, Penn., when Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo Jr. met in a junior high typing class. The pair became known as Gene and Dean Ween.

Thousands of home recordings later, Ween collected a large underground fanbase, despite being generally unknown in mainstream music circles, aside from their fluke 1992 hit “Push Th’ Little Daisies.”

Their earliest home recordings were anarchic and free-spirited. Eventually, the band began to expand its live and studio line-up, providing both a crisper production sound in the studio and an easier live setup, and formed their own label, Chocodog Records. VH1.com describes them as “the ultimate cosmic goof of the alternative rock era – a prodigiously talented and deliriously odd duo …”

Their most recent recording, La Cucaracha, was released in 2007 on Rounder Records.

Tickets are $32 and available at Rockin Rudy's, The Source in the University Center and online at inticketing.com. Show time is 8 p.m.
