Spokane actor Tim Behrens brings “Poor Again … Dagnabbit!,” a one-man stage show by humorist Patrick McManus, to the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21.

McManus, a nationally renowned humor writer has done it again – he’s become poor, and written a new play about it for his even poorer and indentured actor to perform and tour. “The worldwide recession continues to increase the spread of laughlessness across the land,” says Behrens, “and we aim to do our part to combat this situation.”

Both author and actor guarantee laughs as they describe Pat’s childhood of poverty, his confrontations with wolves at the door, his inspired descriptions of the Great Depression’s impacts on everything from cars to maggot farming, and from school assignments to dating. Discover how to make, and inventively present, poverty foods like blood sausage, head cheese and turkey gravy, and discover how to concoct a car from spare parts.

"The audience is reduced to banging their heads on their knees in a rictus of paralyzed delight," wrote the Seattle Times.

Auditions for “Poetry Café”

Whitefish Theatre Company will hold auditions for its Young Actors’ Performance Troupe (second semester) 5-6 p.m. Jan. 23 at the O’Shaughnessy Center. Ongoing troupe members and newcomers will present the theatrical “Poetry Café” at 2 and 7 p.m. March 24.

Directed by April Vogel, the troupe is for older children and teens (grades 6-10) who desire more stage time. “This is truly theatre for kids by kids,” says Vogel. We let the children be the actors and the stage crew, run the lights and sound, and offer musical accompaniment.”

Tuition is $320 per semester with classes 5-6:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Students who would like to audition should come prepared with a song or a monologue.

“The audition is very supportive, but also for the brave and adventurous,” says Vogel.

Regular classes will resume Feb. 6th and run through May 3.
